From There to Here
From working as an architect in the USA and London (when computers were huge and programs were punched cards), then setting up a smallholding and craft enterprise and raising a family through recession, energy crisis, a failing economy, trickle down exonomics and cold war politics, it was never easy making ends meet. A job was Just About Broke struggle. The world felt unsafe and I had to do something. Developing and campaigning with community projects and social enterprises across the UK I learnt a lot, did some good and earned a little … but there was a cost.
Life Happened
Supporting my family – putting bread on the table and building a better world – I was working late, often away, so special moments were often missed then simply gone. Struggling mentally and physically to care for my disabled son and stay connected with my children and family – I was driving fast towards a stone wall one night. I just wanted it all to end – but something held me back – an inner voice or my school motto telling me not to give up.
I met Stephen. He listened. He saw something in me that I couldn’t see. He added street smarts and business savvy to my book smarts and creative idealism. We became partners on a lifetime journey – working with people in impoverished communities to find practical solutions and resolve conflicts. We were pre-internet nomads, living on the road or the waterways – making a living, making a difference, loving life … always adapting.
To cut a long story short we built an organisation, developed a foundation, trained thousands of community activists, worked with the government and launched a radio station – but we were heading for burnout.
The political winds shifted. The economy was in crisis yet again. The outlook was already bleak when I was diagnosed with cancer. Our primary income dried up and again we were struggling. But as they say, when the going gets tough, the tough keep going. I recovered and we put our savings into a new business built around our love of music and healthy food – we felt we’d achieved some balance and could look forward. Then, despite all efforts to live well, cancer returned – with complications and a blue light ride into an emergency procedure. I was dying, drifting away – tired of the fight.
But still something inside urged me not to give up. My eyes opened for a moment to see relief on the nurse’s face, and my husband wiping away tears. I knew for sure that I was alive for a reason and that love had got me through. Clearly there was still work for me to do!
Cancer impacts everyone close to it and I’d ignored the warning the first time. In recovery I took a radical look at our lives and myself. I had work to do to get back on my feet, and I had to own my part in building security for our later years. We both knew we had to reduce stress and restore our bodies, mind and spirit. But we also urgently had to start building a sustainable income. Spending time on creativity: music for Stephen, drawing for me and connecting with nature was the easy bit! Income was the challenge.
Survival as artist or activist or solo-entrepreneur depends on your ability to consistently generate revenue month after month, and still have time and energy for making your art, developing your idea or engaging in stuff that matters to you. Relying on any one revenue stream t any one time is really risky. Multiple income streams is the best way to create stability for your art, your business and your lifestyle ….But how do you do it? Where do you start?
A long-term income felt like a mountain to climb – comfortable retirement an impossible dream! A pandemic. Another recession. Too many people all over the world hungrier, poorer, less safe and more divided than ever. Our grandchildren and families everywhere struggling. Mortgages through the roof. At our age, what could we offer that someone buy might need or buy? Who needs pre-internet experience? How would we finance a new business? How would we find customers? Everything is going online, how is that an opportunity for us? How do you live life if you’re spending all day on a screen? And, would I EVER be able to manage all the technical stuff – and master the jargon – to make anything work? Overwhelmed I felt myself starting to freeze … making excuses (aren’t you getting a bit old for this malarky? You’ve done your bit, put your feet up now ….)
I was not too good with tech – despised the robots, didn’t want to know really/preferred pencil and paper to screens – and not a huge fan of social media (other than following a few FB friends and sharing pictures of plants and rainbows that made me smile with gratitude). I simply didn’t have knowledge to build sites, the money to develop products, the savvy to market our music, or enough ‘following’ to be seen – so how could I ever actually deliver any ‘stuff’ to anyone anyway?
And then that inner tape-recording started playing! Nothing venture nothing gain. Fortune favours the brave. Never too old to be bold … do or die …
So I kept digging into google, searching for clues and signs …. and one day it came. We were rewarded with information and insight that made sense. I decided the time was now. And I started. I started learning how to start and an online busiess and how to earn as an affiliate marketer while I learned.
That was then.
1. What is “Affiliate Marking”?
Simply put: you try a product, you like a product, you recommend it to a friend or a contact – and when they buy it, you get a commission. It’s that straightforward. And if it’s a monthly service or subscription, you can get paid every single month.
It’s a simple idea and its a business model that works – from modest hobby or side hustle to full time six figure business. Affiliate marketing can be a way you top up your pocket money, fund your hobby – or the way you find your freedom and build a legacy!
Can you make money with affiliate marketing? Absolutely you can. You’ll need a combination of strategic planning, consistent effort and determination but 5K a month really is an achievable goal – even from ground zero – and from there you’ll be set to go higher.
Affiliate Marketing is BIG BUSINESS – More Than 80% of Advertisers & Publishers Use Affiliate Marketing Programs. The market value in 2024 was well over $20billion, and market size is expected to double over the next few years, reaching nearly $40 billion by 2031. It’s a digital goldmine for anyone prepared to do the work with diligence and determination – with no pick axe required! Is that you? So how does Affiliate Marketing work?
The Basics…
Have you ever had a fantastic meal out? So yummy and with such fantastic service that you had to tell everyone about it!
Did you tell your friends and recommend they try it themselves?
Did they go and eat there too?
Or what about products that you use, for your work or your hobbies? Do people ask you where you got from, and if you’d recommend the product or the seller?
Yes? Then you’re halfway there.
Well, then imagine you’d asked the restaurant owner or the musical supplier for a code word specific to you. Then if every time your friends use that code word when they order a meal or buy an item the owner would give you a % of their bill – and it wouldn’t cost your friends any extra money at all!
This is exactly how affiliate marketing works – a commission-based business where the owner is reaching new clientele through your recommendation.
Now take this idea online…..
- You’ve used a fantastic service or product (physical or digital) and you’d like to shout about it.
- You ask the business owner for a unique code embedded in a hyperlink (an affiliate link).
- You promote the product/service through various channels using that link *(we will come back to this bit, it’s the part nearly everyone gets wrong at the start!)
- You get a payment, every time someone buys the product through your link.
Not all businesses have an affiliate programme, but more and more are seeing that this can be a very effective and cost-efficient way to get their products and services in front of potential customers.
What’s the catch?
There isn’t one! Really.

- No Control over the Product:As an affiliate marketer, you don’t have direct control over the product or service you’re promoting. So, if the product falls short of a customer’s expectations, it could reflect poorly on you as the affiliate marketer. So it’s vital to pick your products carefully.
- Commission Cuts:Some companies may reduce (or end completely) the commission rate for their affiliate marketers over time, which can impact your earnings potential. It’s crucial to work with an established business that looks after it’s affiliates and has clear guidelines.
- Fluctuating Income:Your income as an affiliate marketer can fluctuate depending on the performance of the product you’re promoting, changes in the market, and other factors. So you want to choose companies you can trust and those that perform well.
Dangers of Affiliate Marketing – 3 red flags!!!
- Affiliate Marketing really is a booming opportunityand of course scamsters jump if there’s quick money to make, preying on individuals – like you and me – who want to build something legitimate.
- You’ll see scams promising you can make money overnight or 6 figures in 30 days. Red alert! You can’t.
Some courses, programmes and businesses will take your money, but never give you clear instructions, leaving you more lost and out of pocket – struggling to find the way to cancel that subscription. - Too many companies, especially if they are new to this, offer poor returns, no resources for their affiliates and no support, leaving you all at sea, floundering with small return for your effort.
3. How to Become an Affiliate
(if you do decide to go this way)
There are literally MILLIONS of companies to choose from, in every sector – and there are networks to help you find the companies with products that fit your interests. When you align yourself with several that you love, you can have multiple income streams.
If you look on just about any company website, you will see the option to become an affiliate. It doesn’t cost anything to join, but then what? Great if you have thousands of followers, and a good understanding of how it all works, but what if you don’t?
- How do you set up the systems?
- Track your income?
- Market the product?
- Build your audience and actually create a business you love?
- How do you got from earning a few pennies to earning thousands?
This can be the point when questions overwhelm!

– 5 Questions before starting any online business
#1: Prepare
When you start on any journey you usually want to know where you want to go – and how to get there. Maybe you have an idea of the type of vehicle that will get you there in a way that suits you. It’s the same for a business journey – you need the right vehicle, or business model, for your purpose and comfort. Affiliate Marketing is a model – and a good one – but there are others that may be a better fit for your personality and work better for your situation.
So ask yourself questions – like Why? And Why not? Will you go it alone, on your own two feet? Do you need a guide? Or a mentor? Make time to look around, see what’s out there and see what really catches your interest and attention.
#2: Ask “Why?”
To thrive, not just survive – as an artist or creative – you want to earn more than a few cents from online streaming or garage sales!
I absolutely knew I wanted to build a profitable business to support my beautiful and creative family: pay off debts, create a safe space and secure our financial base and a future legacy. I wanted us to make more music, sail more, support the people and causes we care about and be able to share family ‘experiences of a lifetime’, every year …. my “why” gave me direction and powered my actions.
Knowing your “why,” putting in the work and investing in foundations, skills and knowledge differentiates the Modern Wealthy – those with an entrepreneurial mindset – from those that want to ‘get rich quick’.
Your “Why” is like your “North Star” – it will keep you on track.
It needs searching for, but once you recognise it, it’s always there to guide you.
#3: Listen to yourself – and Trust your Gut
You may have been down numerous rabbit holes trying to work it all out, or bought books and watched videos and talked to people on how to make it work, and still be left confused and overwhelmed. But – don’t give up! Knowing where you want to get to – and why – is the foundation for all success.
My mother always said -“if you want it enough, you will do it”! She’d also say – “Do your homework – find what works for you – and get on with it“.
So if you have a strong feeling that an online business project could be for you, keep digging! Whether its an online eduction or an affiliate company, or a service or product you want to create. Find a model that looks like a fit and FEELS like a fit – and make a start!

#4 Do It!
I’ve always believed in building for the long term, investing in the future: “A society grows great when old wo/men plant trees in whose shade they shall never sit.” But what will you build, and what will you plant to produce the result, return, legacy you desire?

#5: Invest
No business EVER succeeds without investment!
As an artist or musician, or a grower you know full well that you have to make your ideas it real, develop your skill and practise into being. That means investing time and energy in your art. Your online business dream is no different – unless you put in the work, it won’t get off the ground. Investing enough time and energy to prepare, launch and grow your business is fundamental.
Investing in yourself IS investing in your business – so invest time and energy into preparation and playing with ideas (you want to enjoy this)!. Developing your ideas and your skills and putting the right support in place is investing in yourself and your business. Trial and error and flying by the seat of your pants can be fun, but a roadmap, a guidebook, good kit, tools and clear instructions can be the difference between getting there or getting lost!

5. Top Tips for Success as an Affiliate
Coming from a family of artists, teachers and public servants, and deeply involved in serving communities all my life, authenticity, honesty and integrity are words I live by: I want to surround myself with people who have a similar moral compass. Too many people are out to make a quick buck and have no qualms ‘over promising and under delivering’, but with these three words in mind, you’ll spot the insincerity of affiliate marketers who are out there trying to sell high ticket products they have no interest in or have never tried!
#1 Authenticity: be honest
Being authentic is what sets apart business owners who experience the greatest success with affiliate marketing. Subscribers and customers want to know your honest opinion. They want to know the tools and services you’re using to build your business.
By focusing on being authentic, your affiliate marketing becomes more like you telling a friend to go see a movie, leaving them to decide for themselves. If you can share what you truly like, dislike, and what’s currently working for you, and it becomes more about serving your audience than it is about getting a commission, your affiliate efforts will instantly appeal and attract.
#2: Integrity – be true to yourself
Be a ‘product of the product’. Personally, I will never market something I haven’t used, or recommend something if it hadn’t made life better! I want to be able to talk openly and truthfully about something I have personal experience with – like the courses I ultimately invested in to learn how to be an Affiliate Marketer in the first place – because truth and honesty is where it starts.

Too many people make the mistake of thinking any job is good enough. But when you find your passion, you want to excel. You want to work harder. Passion is a driving force.

#4: Create Value – be generous
If you can show a solution to a problem, then best way to expand your affiliate marketing is by creating valuable content!
Creating valuable content that helps people find an answer is the key and “show me don’t tell me” can be the most effective approach. Sharing an in-depth process of how you’re currently using a specific product or service is a strategy that works, and it can align with making music and artwork too!
Creating content that helps people better understand how YOU use tools in your creation process – whether its art, music or online business – you naturally connect with people who are like-minded, curious, facing similar challenges. By sharing and showing solutions you naturally generate new opt-ins, build trust, and ultimately create affiliate sales.
#5: Stick with it – Don’t Stop. Don’t Give Up!
Rome wasn’t built in a day – or, as our friends in Zambia say, it takes more than a day to eat an elephant!
I may wish I’d understood the digital opportunity when I was 40 – the internet was barely born then – but it’s never too late to make a start. We can now pass on crucial skills, insights and opportunities and are well on the way to creating a lasting egacy before we hang up our boots!
Success does not happen overnight, but with focus and consistent work built on solid foundations, success will come. We’ve had our setbacks and slowdowns, but we have kept going, and the rewards keep coming, and growing.

Authenticity, Honesty and Passion are your three most precious secret ingredients.
Align yourself with the right products and services and an online affiliate business is a route to achieving your success, to becoming your best self, doing what you love best, and loving what you do. (what it is and what you’re not being told)
The “big bucks” myth.
You may have seen ads and articles about Affiliate Marketing from Tik Tok, Instagram or seen videos on YouTube. During the Covid pandemic and lockdown, like many people, we were desperately looking for a way out of our looming financial crisis. Stephen was working on his voice and music, I was trying to market our own organic soap – but I was running in circles and spinning a million plates getting nowhere. I decided to focus on learning digital marketing (for the soap and the music). Its easy to say, not so easy to believe – but the truth is that you’re never too old to learn! There’s plenty of evidence from the neuroscientists to prove it – but experiencing the benefits of learning new skills is personal proof that learning new skills keeps your brain alive and firing – but to have serious success online, you need some EXTRA Secret Sauce to stand out!
The sad reality is that most ‘untrained’ affiliate marketers use outdated, overused, ‘icky’ and often just plain dull strategies that make us glaze over. Words and jabber blend into the online noise we face every time we log on. Think about it- when have you ever bought a product that’s recommended by someone you didn’t like much, or who didn’t seem to know much, or who wasn’t particularly passionate about the product?
What I have learned, and what you too can learn, is that Authority Marketing is the new way that the most successful high-ticket marketers get heard above all the noise online
Authority Marketing is a strategy and a skillset you can learn that creates a shortcut to success. Imagine loving what you do and building an audience that want to hear from you because they can see your passion and they trust you. You may be thinking that you’re not a “master” of anything – but what if I told you that building the skillset to be an authority doesn’t require you to have a degree in it, just a genuine interest in it.
Apply the Authority Marketing approach and it will bring in leads and sales 24/7 on AUTOPILOT without having to get your face out on social media all day and without ever having to ‘sell’, chase or convince. We can see this working already – and every day we are inspired by other ordinary people like us, who are building their best lives and steadily growing their passive income – and, yes, they are reaching 5 and 6 figures a month in less than a year!
10. Find Your Tribe v. Go Alone
One of the biggest blows to me when I left architectural practice was the loss of being part of a community. From being surrounded by intelligent, creative, great humoured and generally like-minded souls working and building buildings together it was just me and Stephen doing everything! Don’t get me wrong, we love working together and we’re a great team with a mix of skills and of course there were lovely people we would meet (several of whom tried to get ue into their MLM/network marketing businesses – I tried it, and hated it!),
Over the years I’ve invested hundreds of hours and probably thousands of pounds in courses and business coaching. I’d briefly engage with others on a similar path, or meet people at an in-person event, but rarely felt connected and engaged in any meaningful way.
When it came to facing the future squarely, and starting an online business in my 60’s during the Covid pandemic I felt pretty lonely! Like so many people who struggled with physical and mental health issues stemming from this, I doubted myself.
Working online without a ‘tribe’ can be hard. It can be a lonely place. It’s worth looking for people on a similar journey – people you can learn with, who will encourage you all the way, who will “validate” your effort, help keep you accountable….because the BIGGEST DIFFERENCE between a failure to launch and having a launchpad to success is the people you surround yourself with!
Aside from the quality of the education, the coaches and the support – what has kept me in this current community for four years now, is the people. People from all over the world creating businesses they love. People who want to spend more time with their families, people who want to give more back to their communities, high-fliers who want a new direction before (and after!) burn-out, and people who have stacked shelves and driven ubers to fund their learning for a new online life.
This online network is my “tribe”. It includes like-minded souls from every walk of life, at every age and stage of life, and from every corner of the globe – and provides an unparalleled camaraderie, inspiration and encouragement born from our shared journeys into the online space.
